Older cats and their food
You will find that as your cat grows older their food needs change and they may require a new or altered diet. They will probably prefer to eat less at their meal times and you may notice that they become choosier about their choice of food. It is quite likely that they will have fewer teeth or that their teeth and gums have become far more sensitive. Food that needs more chewing will be ignored or only nibbled at times, so the less active it’s going to be. Older cats take longer to digest their food too.
With less activity comes a reduction in lean muscle mass and lean body mass, so the energy requirements of the older animal tend to be reduced. The elderly cat takes and requires less exercise and so their lean muscle mass decreases as does their body mass. As a consequence they require less energy and thus less food. Many cats become overweight as they age because their owners continue to feed them the same amount of food as when they were young adult cats. Of course, if your older cat maintains his active approach to life he will need more food. Thus it is important to observe the changes in your cat as they age.
The extra weight puts extra demand on joints and muscles, puts pressure on the heart and lungs and can lead to diabetes, arthritis and kidney disease. Some elderly cats lose too much weight as senior felines find the absorption and digestion of food more difficult. They need a higher calorie diet so that their correct weight is maintained. It is common for many older cats to develop medical conditions that lead them to lose weight such as kidney and thyroid disease. Dietary management plays a key role in controlling many ailments common to older cats such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, kidney failure, dental problems and cancer. Remember; if in doubt always consult your vet.
Many vets will recommend specialist foods for your cat and will happily carry out regular health checks. They can explain the differences between many of the different foods on the market and suggest which may be most suitable for your particular animal. If your cat develops a chronic illness they will usually be able to supply specialist foods for the cat’s diet. For example, a cat with a heart condition may do well with a low sodium senior diet. These can be more expensive than regular cat food but they will help prolong your pet’s life.
An effective senior diet provides concentrated, low fat, high quality, protein and easy to digest carbohydrates for energy. Key minerals support ageing joints, and vitamins, along with protein, help resist infections that the body may become vulnerable to as the immune system declines.
As far as putting out food for your cat is concerned, it is better to avoid leaving food out throughout the day. Get into a routine of feeding him in the mornings and evenings. With older cats you do need to monitor their food intake to avoid over or under feeding, so a regular routine is useful. Be sure to measure the amount of food you give your cat so that you know how much you should increase or decrease the portions should your cat start losing or gaining weight. Always provide plenty of fresh drinking water, as older cats may need to drink more.
Throughout its life, it is a good idea to weigh your cat every one to two months. Most vets weigh cats when they have their yearly check up and vaccination boosters but it is wise to do this more regularly if you can. At the very least use your eyes and hands to check your cat’s body shape. If weight is steadily increasing after 12 months of age, you need to start reducing your cat’s food. Weight loss can be an early sign of illness, so check with your vet.
Cats, like humans, vary in size from small to large, so weight alone will not tell you everything about your cat’s health. The only way to tell if your pet is overweight is to examine it carefully. Can you see a defined waist when viewed from above? Can you feel your pet’s ribs with light finger pressure? If you can’t then it is time to reduce food intake. A potbelly is also a clear sign over feeding or possible health problems so it is definitely time to go on a diet or take the cat to your vet for a check up. Please do not just put your pet on a crash diet as it is dangerous for cats.
With older cats it may be better to follow one of the many senior diets. These tend to be lower in calories and so reduce the chances of weight gain. Restricting protein has not been proved to be beneficial for healthy cats but it does aid cats with kidney problems. If your cat has kidney disease ask your vet for advice on a suitable diet.

Behavior of Cats
Cats are also wonderful animals. They are friendly and quite conscious in every act. Prior to buying cats as pets, it is advised to learn about their behavior and nature. They do have some behavioral issues like using the litter box, biting, being destructive with their claws, and excessive attention seeking problem. Always remember that cats are not at all bad in behavior, they are just uninformed a little in their nature and need care given to them. You must try to solve their behavioral problems one by one so that your pet cat does not feel confused and frustrated. Here are some most referred to behavioral issues in cats:
Attention-Seeking Behavior:
Cats do have attention-seeking behavior as well as increased vocalization when together. The causes of these things may differ from one cat to another like emotional problems, physical pain, excessive punishment to the cat, and so on. If they are suffering from Rippling Skin Disorder, this may also result in howling in the night hours.
Feeling Aggressive Towards Other Cats:
When you have cats in pairs or own more than 2 cats at home, it may result in fights between them. In case the aggression is continuous and active between cats, it will turn out to be ugly and you will have to interfere. The aggressive behavior between cats may occur because of some fear, redirected ruthless behavior, or due to some territorial issue.
Aggressive Behavior towards Humans:
The cats may feel angry towards people because of their master’s poor training in the early years, fear, love and many other factors. You must be able to deal with such behavior of your cat. Try to curb their scratching and biting activities.
Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior in Cats:
Just like human beings, cats can also involve themselves in obsessive-compulsive behavior. They will show such behavior in acts like feeling hypertensive, wool sucking, fur pulling and extreme licking. If you will understand the cause and will try your best to eradicate the problem, this will ensure speedy recovery of your cat.
Destructive and Harmful Chewing by Cats and Kittens:
Destructive chewing by cats is undesirable, first, because of the potential of danger to the cat, and second, because of damage to family valuables. Causes of destructive chewing by cats can range from teething in kittens to curiosity or boredom, and even because of a nutrient deficiency.
Destructive Scratching by Cats:
Are you troubled by harmful clawing by your cats? Please don't consider Draconian measures such as declawing a cat. There are a number of ways you can keep your cats' claws happily engaged in legal clawing with these articles and aids, while protecting furniture and carpeting. Look into getting a scratching post or tree.
Cat Urine Problems:
Inappropriate elimination (litter box avoidance) is the number one reason cats are surrendered to shelters. By eliminating physical causes, such as urinary tract infections, then targeting other common reasons for litter box avoidance, you can help your cat overcome this undesirable behavior. Remember that cats don't like to use a dirty toilet any more than you would.
Shyness and Fear in Cats:
Is your kitty a "scardy-cat?" Shyness and fear stem from a number of causes, but can be overcome with gentleness and patience, as these tips explain. It is always important to allow your cat to set his own pace, and to be patient if his pace is slower than you had hoped for.
Stress and Anxiety in Cats:
While stress itself is not of behavioral origin, it can lead to a number of problems often considered behavioral, such as litter box avoidance or depression. When behavioral problems suddenly appear, savvy cat owners soon learn to first rule out signs of health problems, and next for stress factors, such as changes in the environment.

Cats and the Disease Called Heartworm
What is this condition called heartworm? Heartworm is a disease that is very common yet potentially dangerous and fatal for most domestic animals, more so house cats. This disease originates from infected mosquitoes, which in turn leaves larval infections or parasites that bury themselves deeper and deeper into the different layers of the skin of their hosts, particularly house cats which may have more sensitive skin. The name heartworm is derived from the activity of said parasites within the host body wherein after making its way under the layers of skin. They also find their way through the blood stream until it ultimately reaches the heart of the host. Thereafter, it will sit pretty to grow and develop into a community of parasites that will then have enough capacity to harm the host and pose a condition so fatal as to ensure your cat’s untimely demise. This is no exaggeration. Cat owners, do we finally have your attention?
Perhaps you may have thought that we were merely exaggerating and blowing up this whole issue on heartworm out of proportion because this condition is better known for pet dogs, and even species that belong to the canine family. However, this condition has never been exclusive to canines. After all, it is said that illness knows no definite target. But fortunately for us cat owners and enthusiasts, heartworm indeed has less grave effects in cats and the parasites are a lot less likely to complete the cycle and reach the heart of the infected host. Hence because of this difference in nature of cats, the only real damage these parasites cause is a side effect on the lungs instead of the heart. But at least with cats, the fewer worms and parasites survive the journey within their body. However, this is not to say that we are completely downplaying the significance more so the effects of heartworm on your pet cats. In fact, it is quite the opposite. We seek to caution all cat owners as this is a very important concern more so if you are living in areas that are seemingly saturated with mosquitoes. In this case, the best advice that we would be able to give is to bring your beloved feline to your trusted vet and have it checked for any possible signs of heartworm. Furthermore, you can ask your vet about preventive medicines or methods that would ensure your cat a worm-free heart.
Another advice would be to inquire with your vet about generic alternatives of these preventive heartworm medicines because you do not really need to buy the ones that are branded as these would only bring you nothing more than a greater dent on your budget. While research shows that there is currently no known or concrete product or medicine in the United States for treating feline heartworm infection, there are still ways of ensuring that your cat is healthy enough not to contract this lethal condition. All in all, it is our firm belief that the best mode of prevention for any illness is to keep you well informed. More so with heartworm, well aware is half there.

Cat Furniture: Fun and Healthy
When I got my cats their first piece of cat furniture, years ago,it was a simple pole with three rather small platforms on it. They enjoyed it but it was rather limited. cat furniture has come a long way since then and there are so many terrific styles to choose from now. They have so many added features, like attached toys, scratching posts, cubicles, and many other things, that they are truly wonderful .The addition of sisal scratching posts has been great because cats love sisal. I heard a long time ago that we use carpeted scratching posts for our cats, encourage them to scratch on it, and then get mad because they scratch the carpet on the floor. As smart as we think our cats are (and of course they really are that smart...haha) they don’t know the difference between the carpet on the post and the floor. Poor things are totally confused! The sisal however makes it clear what to scratch on and they like it much better. It makes their cat furniture so much more fun for them and so much easier on our carpets.
The fun that cats have playing on this furniture is a riot to watch. It’s honestly just as much fun for us and I have spent many hours just watching their antics on the cat towers and condos they have. I have noticed that some of my cats that were not exactly friends became very close after a good romp on the tower. They also like to claim their own level for napping and never seem to argue over it. It is very important for cats to know they have their own space, their own territory. They love to sleep with us on our beds and curl up on the couch, but once they know their cat furniture is just for them, they love that sense of it being all theirs. The taller towers, trees and condos are heaven for a cat. They can get up high and survey all that’s going on. I personally think they also enjoy being "above us" and who can blame them. When your that little and always have these tall humans looming over you, well...it must be nice to be taller for a change! The cubicles are a perfect place for them to get in, and still be able to see out, making them feel cozy and safe. The fun of cat furniture never ends.
The other benefit is very important, and one I didn’t really think about at first. Cat furniture keeps our pets healthier. The climbing, jumping and stretching keeps them not only limber, but helps to control their weight. I have had several slightly overweight cats that slimmed down noticeably after playing for a couple of weeks on their tower. I’ve tried putting them on diets, without much success, but the towers and condos worked much better. Like us, the more they move, the better. I think it helps so much for them to stay limber and might keep them from getting arthritic as they age. My older cats certainly seem to be more energetic than they used to be. I can’t say enough about the benefits of cat furniture. It’s not just for fun, but also for the health of your cat. There are so many styles, colors, sizes and options available now that you will be sure to find just the right one for your cat or cats.

Tips For a Healthy Cat
The typical house cat will go through three main life stages. The exact duration of each stage varies between different cats and different breeds, but the time frame is generally quite similar between cats. Cats begin their lives as kittens, and during this process they are constantly growing and developing. It's very important to make sure they are getting proper nutrition and care during this time, as they are especially vulnerable to disease and the elements when young. Make sure your kitten is warm at all times, and is eating a healthy diet of nutritious food. You should also take your kitten to the vet to get shots to protect it against diseases, and to get it spayed or neutered. Kittens have usually reached adult cat hood at around one year old, though some kittens continue growing until they're over two years old.
Once your cat has reached adulthood, the point where she has stopped growing, she continues to live a normal adult life, until around age eight or nine. During this time as an adult, your cat is stronger, and less vulnerable to the dangers that are posed as a kitten. However, your focus should be switched to maintaining a healthy adult cat, in addition to protecting your cat from possible health risks as an older cat. Keeping your adult cat at a healthy weight is also important, as an overweight cat is more likely to get other health problems.
Annual trips to the vet should be a top priority, to check up on your cat's health and detect any problems early. You should also keep your eyes peeled for the first signs of diseases that show up in older cats, like heart disease and feline diabetes.
Cats over the age of eight or nine are considered senior cats, entering their last stages of life. However, there is still much that can be done to ensure your senior cat has a healthy life. It's a good idea to go to the vet twice a year at this point as an additional step to detect any health problems early. Focusing on dental health is also very important now, and it may be necessary to adjust your senior cat's diet to accommodate any health issues. For example, a cat with weak teeth may need a more moist diet, while an overweight cat should go on a weight control diet. These tips can ensure your cat will live a happy, healthy life.

Fish Oil for Cats
Why Your Cat Needs Fish Oil
Fish Oil for Cats - Does your cat have dry, hairless patches? Does she show signs of low or no energy and stiff joints? Perhaps you have to get him a pharmaceutical grade fish oil with omega-3 fatty acids supplement. Say what? You might be considering right this moment.
Well, much like fish oil for human beings, fish oil for felines could help boost its immune system, cognitive functions, arthritis, behavior, levels of cholesterol, provide cancer prevention and give them a shiny coat.
Benefits of fish oil for cats can also assist with swelling which, if not treated, can lead to the kind of difficulties as strokes, heart attacks, high-cholesterol, early death, and many different kinds of infections.
Fish Oil for Cats is also really effective in treating numerous overall health difficulties and increasing their survival rate. Veterinarians are using fish oil with omega-3 fatty acids for cats in a regular therapy program because they are much more quickly absorbed into the system and show results faster than most of the others.
Exactly like our own food, their food lacks the extra Omega-3 fatty acids which they need just as much as we do. You may be asking yourself why you should worry about such a small dietary detail just for a cat, however let's be honest, exactly what would we do without having our furry friends? Study demonstrates those who own pets have far less health problems than individuals who do not special pets.
It has been verified that pet owners use a reduced heart attack mortality rate by 3%, better psychological well-being, reduced triglyceride and cholesterol levels, less stress, and visit the physician much less than people who do not have pets.
Research also show that kids who've pets experience a nurturing nature that might keep on into adult-hood, stay involved in extracurricular activities, for example sports activities, clubs, and hobbies, possess increased cognitive abilities, and less allergies when subjected to pets throughout their 1st years of life.
Right after giving the cat fish oil, you may not notice a change for some months. That is because, once again, the same as us, their systems change from within. From individual cells, to tissues, to organs, and ultimately the skin and hair become radiant. You don't have to purchase a special fish oil with omega-3 fatty acids for cats, the ones all of us use works just fine.
Omega-3 fatty acids that supply most advantages are DHA and EPA. Examine labels carefully to find the purest form of omega-3 fatty acids fish oil that filter out harmful toxins in the fish from the water streams they come from, making sure it has already been molecularly distilled in order to filter the harmful toxins that consist of the harmful chemicals mercury and dioxin. It's correct our cats need all of us for his or her well being just like we need them for our well being. Buy Fish Oil for Cats for your loved feline today
