BBS, 'ancestors' Internet

The reader, at the present time, we are certainly very easy to use internet and all its functions. These are easy, fast, and inexpensive. But, did you ever imagine life about 30 years ago? Now, through this article, the author would like to invite you to meet with internet ancestors, who started everything.
Nowadays, looking for information on the internet like turning the palm of the hand. Live fire up the connection, open the browser, and then call "Uncle Google" and write down what you want, then science will soon be yours, complete with audio visual presentation. So easy, even an early age children were already familiar with the internet.
Narcissistic and want quick fame? Ah, it's the small matter! Just open Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube, then in a matter of seconds everything about you will be widespread. No need to use a broadband connection or broadband that can deliver tens of gigabytes of data each time the clock ticking, with just a cheap CDMA phone you can show off your collection of photos and video.
Internet bill to swell? Well, it used to be. Although Indonesia's current internet subscription fee still can not say cheap, at least for most people the Internet has to offer provider rates will not make its customers sell rice or whole month of fasting.
However, if we want to look for a moment 30 years ago, things above may be just a dream. But make no mistake, because without a dream, perhaps creative people in that era would not create something that is ultimately developed, and we enjoy today.
Ancestor
Forerunner of the Internet itself actually been born in the era of the '70s, but its circulation was limited and the technology is still simple.
In 1978, a computer activist named Ward Christensen got the idea to create a communication system that allows a person to interact with others who are far away place. Together with his friend Randy Suess, he also created a BBS (Bulletin Board System), which is a system that allows computer users to communicate via modem and phone home.
The first BBS system was officially launched in Chicago on February 16, 1978 and was named CBBS (Computerized Bulletin Board System). With BBS, users can upload and download applications, play games online, post news, or talking through a bulletin board (forum now online).
Of course the application and the game is very small, probably no bigger than your Microsoft Word document. The interface is simple, largely dominated by text.
To run a BBS, the user must install a modem to the computer, then connect it to the phone. Then, the user to dial a special phone number, and the BBS software will bring up the login screen. Type the username and password, and users are connected to the BBS system.
The longer the BBS is also becoming widespread, some free and some are paid. So many people feel the need to manage the BBS-BBS that keep popping up. Then, came the name System Operator (sysop), people who act as the administrator running the BBS, the task is something like the current forum administrator.
Speaking of speed, it seems appropriate if we make the BBS as a test of patience. If you want to brew a stew noodles and warm milk to make, please do it after you run the BBS software, because the loading time is more than enough to make you do the above activities.
And approximately how long the user will get feedback? Do not be surprised! If in the days now you can post on the forum and other users will reply in less than a minute, it takes many months for messages to be posted using the BBS terposting on the bulletin board, and finally in-reply by others .
Cost needed to be able to enjoy the BBS was probably going to make us gawk. A set of computers that have BBS-ready sort of Atari, Apple 2, Commodore 64 or will be taken home after you drain the pocket around $ 3000! Oh yes, if you want to keep data downloads from the BBS, then at least you need to set up a capacity of 5MB of hard disk which was then the price is almost the same as the price of the computer on. Terrible huh?
Users still have to pay your phone bill each month. Generally, usage charges are USD 10 to USD 15 per hour. Imagine how much money must be spent to pay for facilities seminimalis it?
Although the BBS looks 'katrok' when compared with today's technology, like it or not we should recognize that that is the ancestor of the Internet system that we enjoy today. Although it has been extinct in the mid 90's era, BBS has been a pioneer of mass communication and interaction among fellow inhabitants of Earth are far from their homes and did not know each other.
Curious?
In this article the authors did not discuss in detail about the ins and outs of BBS. Such information may already be familiar to enthusiasts of technology in Indonesia, but this information may be a new thing for the younger generation who are new to the internet and take advantage of once the technology is sophisticated as it is now.
Well, if you are interested to know more about the BBS, the authors suggest to watch a DVD titled BBS The Documentary which can be obtained at www.bbsdocumentary.com. The documentary is driven by Jason Scott, a computer practitioner who first took part in the development of the BBS.
Through this DVD you can see what kind of BBS, what are the devices used, and also comments from people who used to take advantage of the BBS. All reviewed thoroughly, until finally BBSextinct and were replaced by the internet.
If you want to know what post-post that has appeared on the BBS, you can access www.textfiles.com, a page which is also managed by Jason Scott archive containing a collection of conversations and post BBS who had rescued and diabadikannya on the site.
