Grape Sharpen Vision in Elderly

This popular fruit is one of many. It was sweet, sometimes a little sour. This wine, juicy fruits are rich in antioxidants. Apparently, consuming wine can be healthy vision, especially in old age!

The team from Fordham University in the United States examined the effects of antioxidant-rich foods for vision problems that arise with age. They use mice because the mice also suffered damage to the retina in old age, such as humans.

These rats were given three types of food, namely the full content of grape, with an added lutein (protective substances retina), as well as regular food. The result, wine beat lutein in protecting oxidative damage in the retina and prevent blindness in mice. Lutein is also effective, but the wine shows a significant advantage.

In research published in the 'Free Radical Biology and Medicine' is written that the Grape reduces and prevents the accumulation of lipofuscin in the retinal pigment oxidative damage to epithelium (RPE). Hence, this fruit can optimize the function of the retina is an important part.

"Grape beneficial for vision in the elderly, even when consumed young," explains Silvia Finnemann, head of research, as quoted by the Times of India.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition in which the macula (central retina) is slowly damaged. AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly.

Silvia draw conclusions from this study, the decrease in visual function with age is due to oxidative damage that accumulates. "Eating a diet rich in natural antioxidants such as grape used for health and function of the retina," said Silvia.
